Welcome to the NENC Referrals Management Centre...

For people in North East and North Cumbria referred for possible ADHD. Before your next step is arranged, we'll ask you to answer some questions and have a short appointment with a nurse - this is called an ADHD referral review.

What is this service?

The ADHD Referral Management Service reviews your referral information to work out what your next step should be.

This is not an ADHD assessment. It does not give you a diagnosis. Looking at this early helps you get to the right support sooner.

Why have I been referred this way?

Some difficulties can look like or overlap with ADHD - such as anxiety, stress, low mood, or sleep problems. This review helps us look at your needs earlier.

What do I need to do?

Answer some online questions

You'll receive an email with a link. Takes 10–15 minutes. Your answers save automatically - come back any time using the same link. There are no right or wrong answers.

After the questions, book a 15-minute appointment with a nurse trained in ADHD referrals. Choose from appointments available in the next 30 days.

What happens after your appointment?

We'll email you to explain your next step, along with an information pack. Your next step will be one of:

Speaking with your GP about support options

Self-help resources, webinars or coaching

ADHD assessment referral

Broader support across wider needs

Will this affect my Right to Choose?

Being referred into this service does not remove your Right to Choose. If you are referred for an ADHD assessment, patient choice will be managed in line with the usual rules.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ADHD Referral Management Service?

The ADHD Referral Management Service helps work out the next step for people who have been referred for possible ADHD.

  • You'll answer some online questions.
  • You'll then have a short appointment with a nurse trained in ADHD referrals.

This is called an ADHD referral review.

Is this an ADHD assessment?

No. This is not an ADHD assessment and does not give you a diagnosis. It helps decide whether an ADHD assessment may be the most helpful next step, or whether another type of support may help you more at this time.

Why do I need to do this first?

Some difficulties can look like ADHD or overlap with ADHD symptoms. These may include stress, anxiety, low mood, sleep problems, feeling overwhelmed or difficulties with daily routines.

  • Some people will need an ADHD assessment.
  • Other people may need different support first.

This review helps us look at your needs earlier, so you can be guided to the support that best fits your situation.

Does this mean I will not get an assessment?

Not necessarily. For some people, the next step will be an ADHD assessment. For other people, another type of support may be more helpful at this time. Your next step will be based on the information you share in your questions and your appointment with the nurse.

Do my answers decide my outcome automatically?

No. Your answers help guide the review. A nurse will look at your answers and talk with you before your next step is confirmed.

What will the questions ask?

The questions will ask about:

  • your symptoms
  • your daily life
  • your wellbeing
  • any support you need
  • any safety concerns

This helps us understand what support may be best for you.

How long do the questions take?

The questions usually take 10 to 15 minutes to complete, but there is no time limit.

Can I stop and come back later?

Yes. Your answers save automatically as you go. For security, each session stays open for about 1 hour. If you need to stop, you can use the same link to come back and carry on where you left off.

Can someone help me answer the questions?

Yes. You can ask someone you trust to help you - a family member, friend, carer or support worker. Please make sure the answers reflect your own experiences.

If you need guidance using the questionnaire, our online chatbot can help (green bubble found in the bottom right of your screen).

What happens after I answer the questions?

You'll be asked to book a short appointment with a nurse. The appointment will last about 15 minutes. You'll be able to choose from appointments available in the next 30 days.

What happens during the nurse appointment?

The nurse will talk to you about:

  • your answers
  • your symptoms
  • how things affect your life
  • what support you need
  • what you would like help with

This is not an ADHD assessment. It's a short appointment to help work out your next step.

What are the possible next steps?

There are 4 possible next steps. You may be:

  • Asked to speak with your GP about support options.
  • Given support information, self-help resources, webinars or coaching.
  • Referred for an ADHD assessment.
  • Referred or guided to broader support if you need help in more than one area.
Will this affect my Right to Choose?

No. Being referred into the Referral Management Service does not remove your Right to Choose. If you are referred for an ADHD assessment, patient choice will be managed in line with the usual rules.

Will my GP know what happens?

Yes. Your GP practice will be told when your ADHD review is complete. They will be told your outcome and any suggested next steps.
