Dr Rehana Shakir is a highly experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with over 25 years’ experience in the NHS, specialising in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and complex neurodevelopmental conditions across children, adolescents, and adults.
She is the Clinical Lead for the Autism and ADHD Pathway for children and adolescents with special needs at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. In this role, Dr Shakir takes overall responsibility for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of neurodevelopmental conditions, including presentations associated with severe challenging behaviours and co existing mental health disorders.
Dr Shakir completed her postgraduate psychiatric training in the Oxford Deanery, specialising in the psychiatry of intellectual disabilities. Over the course of her career, she has developed advanced expertise in neurodevelopmental conditions across the lifespan, supported by further postgraduate qualifications in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
She is formally trained in gold standard diagnostic and therapeutic tools, including Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI R), PEERS® Social Skills Training for autistic children and adolescents.
As a Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Shakir has worked across a wide range of clinical settings, including the management of a complex and highly challenging inpatient unit in Oxford. She is currently Lead Psychiatrist for outpatient neurodevelopmental services, working closely with families, schools, social care, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated, holistic care.
In addition to her NHS role, Dr Shakir has been providing private autism and ADHD assessments for both children and adults for over many years at Harley street in London and at PUK. She is particularly experienced in assessing complex and nuanced presentations of neurodiversity, and consistently receives very positive feedback from patients and parents. Her calm, thoughtful, and compassionate approach helps patients feel heard, understood, and comfortable throughout the assessment process.
Dr Shakir is also deeply committed to medical education and training. She has previously delivered postgraduate teaching in the Oxford Deanery, lecturing on intellectual disabilities. She is currently a clinical trainer for junior doctors and is actively involved in undergraduate medical student teaching at Oxford.
Renowned for her empathetic, patient centred approach, Dr Shakir believes strongly in placing the individual and their family at the heart of care, ensuring that assessments and treatment plans are both evidence based and tailored to each person’s unique needs.
